You probably recognize many of these trigger names: Mission, Bungalow, Stickley, Wm Morris,
or Craftsman. Continued popularity on the west coast and mid west for many years has brought the few and the new on the east coast renewed interest in this era. Originating in England in the late 1800s due to a growing distaste for mass produced goods brought on by the industrial revolution. The quality of these goods just wasn't the same as the true handcrafted works of copper, silver, iron, textiles, etc....
The looks of the Arts & Crafts period can be somewhat broken down into: Craftsman or Mission style - strong straight lines, Stickley furniture is a fine example and the look was inspired by Spanish settlers and their mission churches; Prairie style - a look inspired by the mid west and Native Americans; Bungalow style, a look inspired by cottages that could be found in India by the sea; and Aesthetic style which is the earliest "anti industrialism" look. Charles Eastlake loved this look and it inspired many of his pieces. This look has a strong Japanese influence.
